Beta Psi Chapter HistoryIn the summer of 2000, Janice Mejia felt that Northwestern University needed an organization that would give the guidance and support to empower women and the community; an organization that would cater not only towards the needs of Latinas, but all women as a sisterhood. Through extensive research she decided that Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., the first of its kind, was the organization for which she was searching.
In March 2001, Beta Psi Chapter was founded by six determined ladies. They all agreed that the goals set forth by Lambda Theta Alpha should be the principle goals for Beta Psi chapter as well. These goals were and continue to be: scholarly excellence, empowerment of Latinas and the Universal Woman, cultural and political awareness, and community activism. Since our Founding Line, Beta Psi has kept a strong reputation as true leaders on campus and in the greater community. Not only does each sister embrace the Universal Woman with commitment to various organizations, the chapter truly exemplifies our motto "Latin by Tradition, Not by Definition." Sisters represent all kinds of nationalities, including but NOT limited to Puerto Rican, Mexican, Irish, German, African American, Jordanian, Ecuadorian, Honduran, Colombian, and Haitian. |
